BETELCO was established in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1991 as a private limited company by its founder and current Managing Director, T A M Nurul Basher - an electrical engineer by training from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The company had a very modest beginning with its first consignment of 25 transformers being supplied to Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA).
